Frequently Asked Questions

With cannabis legal for adults in Oregon and Washington State, what are the benefits of having a medical marijuana card?

With a doctor’s authorization for medical marijuana, patients gain expanded legal protections and access to greater allowances. Cardholders may grow, possess, and process larger quantities of cannabis and cannabis extracts without risk of arrest. They also receive significant dispensary discounts, can purchase higher-dose edibles, and are permitted to carry up to 24 ounces of cannabis in Oregon, Washington, and several other states. In addition, medical marijuana cards provide access to dispensaries in states such as Hawaii and Louisiana where adult-use cannabis is not yet legal.

Our office offers expert guidance on all aspects of medical cannabis, including cultivation, possession, travel, and navigating interactions with employers, law enforcement, or the courts. We also assist patients with employment-related drug testing concerns and issues related to court supervision.

Under state medical marijuana laws, patients with a physician’s authorization are permitted to cultivate, possess, and use medical cannabis. Licensed dispensaries often offer discounted prices on cannabis and cannabis plants for cardholders. Additionally, patient support groups in every state with medical marijuana programs facilitate the sharing or exchange of plants, strains, and medicine. While patients with proper authorization may legally obtain cannabis, it is important to note that purchasing from unlicensed sources remains illegal for the seller, though the patient is not held liable.
